Course Introduction
¡Bienvenidos! I am lucky to have you in my class this trimester and I am excited to get started. This trimester we will learn Spanish through a focus on language and cultureand a strong emphasis on listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
I have extremely high expectations for you, and you should expect that I will push you to achieve your maximum potential in this class. I look forward to working with each and every one of you throughout the trimester so that you are empowered to take charge of your own education and experience success not only in Spanish, but in other classes – and outside of school – as well
Class Rules: The Expected Behaviors
1. Be prepared - ready to start, with all materials in class
2. Bring a positive attitude with you to class.
3. Respect others - Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
4. Each student should be in his/her seat when the bell rings.
5. Follow directions - no side conversations.
6. Leave personal grooming and eating outside the classroom.
7. Keep classroom clean.
8. Academic honesty is essential! (*see below)
*Each student is responsible for his/her own learning. All work should be completed independently unless otherwise notified. Cheating will result in the grade of a zero.

Class Materials
Ö 3 Ring Binder (With sections for Warm-Ups, Class work, Exit Slips, Quizzes etc. This is absolutely essential in order to ensure you are prepared, organized, and successful in this class and to solve any discrepancy with your grade!
Ö Notebook required.
Ö Pens and/or Pencils
*I require that you buy an English-Spanish/Spanish-English dictionary for your use throughout this course and throughout your life as a speaker of Spanish! This is required.

Core Academic Content:Vocabulary related to units of study, all past tense verbs -ar,-er and-ir, regular and irregular (Preterit and Imperfect), Commands, Review of Reflexive verbs.
The verb ir (to go), Gustar +nouns, Comparatives and stem-changing verb.
Units of Study:1. La ciudad y sus lugares, 2. Necesito un doctor, 3. Celebraciones

Forms of assessment/grading scale:
A variety of formats and scoring guides will be utilized to evaluate student performance in specific areas related to functional proficiency. Below is a listing of the areas that will comprise student grades with a listing of the percentage each area counts toward the overall grade.
Class work, Sponge Activities, HW and Participation 40%
Daily homework, warm up activities and course-work serve to address the language skills of listening,
speaking, reading and writing in Spanish. A system of checks, credit and letter grades will be used to
evaluate performance. At the start of each class students will respond a prompt related to current
material. At the end of each week these prompts will be collected for evaluation.

Formative Assessments (Tests & Quizzes) 20%
Quizzes serve as periodic mini assessments of vocabulary and grammar acquisition and are most often announced beforehand, but not always. You can expect some pop quizzes from time to time. Pop quizzes generally cover information learned that week in class.

Performance Assessments (20%)
Performance assessments for this course can be defined as achievement tests with a proficiency orientation that measure student performance in the language skills of listening, reading and writing.
Presentational Speaking/ Projects/ Blog (20%)
Performance speaking and projects for this course can be defined as achieved with proficiency, when the students are able to communicate a message in the target language. Student oral participation will be assessed daily. Each student is expected to participate in group activities stays in the target language every day. Blog will be used to do group projects and classroom discussion.

Classroom Policies & Procedures
Ö Work Bell to Bell: Learning time is precious and cannot be wasted. I expect you to work from the ringing of the first bell through the ringing of the last bell.
The Esponja must be completed in its entirety in the first 10 minutes of class or you will receive NO CREDIT.


Ö Using the Restroom: You are permitted to use the restroom only in cases of emergencies. You are responsible for all missed class work during that time and must have your pass in order to leave the classroom.

Ö Absences: If you are absence, it is your responsibility to make up work that was assigned. You may also go to the classroom website at home to print off the assignments for yourself (**http:/Antigua.wikispaces.com/**). If you miss a test or quiz, you are expected to speak with Ms.Breeding-Hale the day you return to class to arrange a time to make it up after school, or else you will receive a zero. For handouts you will check the wall “Absent work folders” on the right as you enter the class.

Ö RE-TEST: If you make a low score on a test or a quiz you may come to tutorials the very next week to re-do the quiz or test. (after school)

Ö Electronics: There are to be absolutely no electronic devices visible or used in the classroom.


Ö Cursing:There is to be no profanity or any other inappropriate language or behavior in the classroom. The classroom is a safe environment and no one should ever be made uncomfortable by someone else’s words or actions.
